Towards Healthy Aging for Older People Living with HIV: Recommendations of The International Symposium on HIV and Healthy Aging
With a growing proportion of older people in the global population, healthy ageing is now widely recognised as key global challenge in both health and equity. This is indicated by the recent launch of the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing from 2021-2030, which is a global collaboration, seeking to bring together governments, civil society, international agencies, professionals, academia, the media, and the private sector to improve the lives of older people, their families, and the communities in which they live. At the same time, the effectiveness and increasing coverage of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment among people living with HIV (PLWH) is resulting in a growing number of older people with HIV globally and regionally (in Asia). The growth in this population represents success in treating HIV, but at the same time results in an increasing burden for health systems and societies, that must respond to the complex needs of older people with HIV in order to achieve healthy aging.
