The drug rehabilitation program in correctional facilities should include alternative modalities besides Therapeutic Community (TC). One of the alternative approach is Motivational Interviewing (MI).
In collaboration with the Directorate General of Corrections, Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham), PPH UAJ conducted implementation research to develop MI guidelines as an alternative modality in the delivery of social rehabilitation in prisons.
About the Motivational Interviewing Study
This study shows that MI reduces the inmates’ desire to use drugs and risky behaviors, such as injecting drug use. MI is a potential alternative in social rehabilitation due to its flexibility and adaptability to the available resource.
The MI approach requires fewer resources. While TC requires additional staff, facilities, and various group activities, MI focuses on the counselor’s direct interaction with the inmates. Trained MI counselors have a crucial role in the rehabilitation’s success. This MI intervention produced the implementation guidelines for social rehabilitation at Correctional Facilities from two pilot correctional facilities.
Results
Both MI and TC can improve the quality of life of inmates. However, data shows that inmates with MI intervetion tend to have higher improvement scores. This study indicates the potential effectiveness of drug rehabilitation with MI. In terms of management, MI can improve the quality of life of inmates who participate.
The improvement in quality of life for MI participants tends to be higher than for those using the TC approach. Operationally, implementing MI in drug rehabilitation is efficient, while still delivering quality of life improvements. MI excels in psychological and environmental aspects, whereas WBP in TC shows better results in social relationships. Inmates’ quality of life is also influenced by the prison environment, such as relationships with officers, security, and meaningful activities. This highlights that rehabilitation programs, both TC and MI, must consider the prison environment to achieve optimal outcomes.
